Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (Saint Louis). The Old courthouse construction began in 1983 and continued until the dome was completed in 1862. The Old Courthouse was the setting of the 1874 and 1850 trials of Dred Scott. murals by Carl Wimar adorn the upper levels of the rotunda. Museum galleries featuring exhibits on St. Louis history are open to the public, as are two restored courtrooms. The balconies in the Old Courthouse rotunda are decorated with bunting to celebrate independence day. the garrison-type flag is the largest of the regulation U.S. flags. Historically flown from 100 foot wooden flagstaffs at military posts, it measures 36 feet long and 20 feet wide. Thank you Mary Ellen!
