Australia is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. The federation comprises six states and several territories. The population of 22.9 million is heavily concentrated in the Eastern states and is highly urbanized. ( source ) Thank you Vikki!

The Australian Antarctic Territory ( AAT ) is a part of Antarctica. It was claimed by the United Kingdom and placed under the authority of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1933. It is the largest territory of Antarctica claimed by any nation. Since the Antarctic Treaty came into force in 1961, Article 4 of which states "The treaty does not recognize, dispute, nor establish territorial sovereignty claims; no new claims shall be asserted while the treaty is in force", most countries do not recognize territorial claims in Antarctica. Green Island is a very popular coral cay 27 km (17 mi) offshore from Cairns, Queensland, Australia located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park World Heritage Area. The island was formed approximately 6,000 years ago by waves depositing sand, coral and other debris onto its coral foundations. Today the island supports diverse vegetation, including dry coastal/beach plants and a vine thicket rain forest. There are no natural freshwater springs on the island - all vegetation relies on rainwater and a small freshwater lens located under the island. The local Aboriginal people (particularly Dick Moses, speaking Yidinyji) have reported that some time back in the past (in time immemorial) Dabuukji (Green Island) was approximately four times the size it is now. The present coral cay is only the north-east portion of the whole, original island. ( source ) Thank you for this wonderful surprise Heather! Heather has a postcard blog too, go and have a look! :) http://heathersp...

South Australia is a state of Australia in the southern central part of the country. It covers some of the most arid parts of the continent; with a total land area of 983,482 sq km (379,725 sq mi), it is the fourth largest of Australia's six states and two territories. With over 1.6 million people, the state comprises less than 8% of the Australian population and ranks fifth in population among the states and territories. The majority of its people reside in the state capital, Adelaide, with most of the remainder settled in fertile areas along the south-eastern coast and River Murray. The state is known as a state of festivals and of fine wine. The state's economy centres on the agricultural, manufacturing and mining industries and has an increasingly significant finance sector as well. ( source ) Thank you Amie!

Tasmania is an Australian island and state. It is located 240 km south of the continent, from which it is separated by Bass Strait. The state includes the island of Tasmania – the 26th largest island in the world – and the surrounding islands. The state has a population of 500,000 (as of December 2008), of whom almost half reside in the greater Hobart precinct. Tasmania’s area is 68,401 sq km, of which the main island covers 62,409 square kilometers. Tasmania is promoted as the natural state and the "island of inspiration" owing to its large and relatively unspoiled natural environment. Almost 37% of Tasmania lies in reserves, national parks and World Heritage Sites.  ( via Wikipedia ) Thank you Melissa!

Karen says, that she first saw a map like this one in the 80’s – very likely it was a reaction to American’s referring to Australia as the land “down under”.

#4 Australia - Australian National Flag

Image
The Australian national flag is the result of a competition held in 1901. The Union Jack, national flag of the United Kingdom, occupies the top left corner. Directly below is the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star. The right side of the flag depicts the Southern Cross, a constellation seen in Australia’s night sky.
