Missouri (the cave state) is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. The state is named for the Missouri River, which was named after the Siouan-language tribe, whose name in Illinois was ouemessourita ( wimihsoorita ), meaning "those who have dugout canoes". Nickname is The Show Me State. It’s the 18th most populous state with a 2009 estimated population of 5,987,580. Missouri's capital is Jefferson City. Missouri was originally acquired from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase and became defined as the Missouri Territory. The Old Courthouse was the setting of the 1874 and 1850 trials of Dred Scott. murals by Carl Wimar adorn the upper levels of the rotunda. Museum galleries featuring exhibits on St. Louis history are open to the public, as are two restored courtrooms. The balconies in the Old Courthouse rotunda are decorated with bunting to celebrate independence day. the garrison-type flag is the largest of the regulation U.S. flags.
