My first card received from Qatar – a new country for my collection! Qatar is a sovereign Arab state, located in Western Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeasterly coast of the much larger Arabian Peninsula. Qatar has been ruled as an absolute monarchy by Al Thani family since the mid-19th century. Formerly a British protectorate noted mainly for pearling, it became independent in 1971, and has become one of the region's wealthiest states due to its enormous oil and natural gas revenues. The national flag of Oman consists of three stripes (white, green and red) with a red bar on the left that contains the national emblem of Oman. The white stands for peace and prosperity, the green for fertility and the Green Mountains, and the red for battles against foreign invaders. The flag of Sardinia , popularly known in Sardinia also as the Four Moors flag is the traditional and officially recognized flag of the island, now an Autonomous Region of Italy. The flag consists of a St George's Cross, with a maure (moor's head) in each quarter. ( source ) Thank you Margherita!

The national flag of Belgium contains three equal vertical bands of black, yellow, and red. The colours were taken from the colours of the Duchy of Brabant, and the vertical design may be based on the flag of France. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN ) is a geo-political and economic organization of ten countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on 8 August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Its aims include accelerating economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, protection of regional peace and stability, and opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully. The current flag of the U.S. state of Georgia was adopted on May 8, 2003. It has three red and white stripes and the state coat of arms on a blue field in the upper left corner. Thirteen stars surrounding the seal denotes Georgia's position as one of the original thirteen colonies. On the seal three pillars supporting an arch represent the three branches of government; legislative, judicial and executive. A man with sword drawn is defending the Constitution, whose principles are wisdom, justice and moderation. The date 1776 represents the signing of the Declaration of Independence. New royal card for mu collection! The Niagara Falls , located on the Niagara River draining Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, is the collective name for the Horseshoe Falls and the adjacent American Falls along with the comparatively small Bridal Veil Falls, which combined form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world and has a vertical drop of more than 50m. Niagara Falls forms the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. ( source ) Thank you Heather!

South Carolina state flag. Crescent portion of the flag was designed by Col. William Moultrie in 1775 to match the emblem worn on the hats of S.C. troops and the color of their uniforms. Palmetto tree added later to represent Moultrie’s heroic defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan’s Island against the attack of the British fleet on June 28, 1776. This “evacuation” tag and American flag of Bunzo Nagato represent the ironic situation of many Japanese Americans during World War II. While the Nagato family was incarcerated in Poston concentration camp, Bunzo’s oldest son Fumitake “Jimmy” Nagato was serving in the United States Army in France, where he was killed in action. Nunzo Nagato received this flag for use at his son’s funeral. (from the card) Thank you Laura!

The flag of Sweden is a Scandinavian cross that extends to the edges of the flag. This Scandinavian cross represents Christianity. According to Ancient and Heraldic traditions much symbolism is associated with colors. The colors on the Swedish flag represent the following: Yellow - a symbol of generosity; Blue - vigilance, truth and loyalty, perseverance & justice. ( source ) Thank you Johanna!

Beer in Belgium varies from pale lager to lambic beer and Flemish red. There are approximately 178 breweries in the country, ranging from international giants to microbreweries. The Trappist monasteries that now brew beer in Belgium were occupied in the late 18th century primarily by monks fleeing the French Revolution. However, the first Trappist brewery in Belgium (Westmalle) did not start operation until 10 December 1836, almost 50 years after the Revolution. That beer was exclusively for the monks and is described as "dark and sweet." The first recorded sale of beer (a brown beer) was on 1 June 1861. ( source ) Thank you Akitoyo!

In 2011 I made a really great postcrossing friend from PC forum. She always sends me royal and map cards. Most of the UK royal cards are sent by Eileen. In December I received this surprise present from her: And inside I found a lot of yummy goodies: Like always – royal, map and flag cards. Wooden Christmas ornament. Obama chocolate from her trip to USA. Jerusalem themed chocolate from her trip to Israel. Package labels, Christmas badge. Rainbow Drops and my new favorite – Chorley Cakes. I ate all 4 in the same day! They are so so delicious! Thank you Eileen! Hope we have more swaps in 2012!

The National flag of India is a horizontal tricolor in equal proportion of deep saffron on the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom.  In the center of the white band, there is a wheel in navy blue to indicate the Dharma Chakra, the wheel of law in the Sarnath Lion Capital. This center symbol or the 'CHAKRA',  is a Buddhist symbol dating back to 200th century BC. Its diameter approximates the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes, which intends to show that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; the white, for purity and truth; the green for faith and fertility. ( source ) Thank you Nagi7!
